Echinamide™ Cough & Cold Syrup

Almost more common than the cold is the ‘common cough.’ Natural Factors, the Canadian leader in innovative, health-enhancing products, has formulated a unique cold and cough syrup – it helps to heal your cold while it quiets the irritating urge to cough. Leading the active ingredients that promote healing and cough suppression is a standardized extract of Echinacea, the antiviral, antibacterial immune system enhancer.

A superior cold and cough syrup must also act as an expectorant, helping to break up existing phlegm. Mullein and horehound are excellent expectorants.

The main reason for taking a cough syrup is to stop coughing. A delightful combination of healing oils of lemon, eucalyptus and peppermint, not only makes the product tasty, but also quiets the urge to cough. The blend of Echinacea with other herbal compounds soothes the pain of infected tissues.

Unique Among Cough Syrups
Most herbal cough syrups contain only few ingredients. Natural Factors Echinamide™ Cold & Cough Syrup contains a broad range of healing herbs and plant oils that work synergistically.

Echinacea Polysaccharides and Alkylamides
A great cold and cough syrup will enhance the immune system while controlling the viruses and bacteria that cause inflammation. Echinacea does both, making it a key component in Echinamide™ Cold & Cough Syrup. The addition of Echinacea purpurea actives, primarily polysaccharides and alkylamides, makes Natural Factors Echinamide™ Cold & Cough Syrup unique among traditional herbal cough syrups. Rather than merely suppressing the urge to cough, the Echinacea harnesses the body’s own healing power. Particularly effective is the high fraction of Echinacea purpurea polysaccharides in the syrup. They linger in the throat, prolonging the antibacterial and antiviral effect.

The Echinacea actives stimulate immune cells into action. “These include white blood cells, such as lymphocytes and macrophages. Echinacea also supports the production of interferon, an important part of our immune response to viral infections causing colds and flu.” 1

Quality Echinacea products start with the highest quality fresh plants, picked at their peak. Echinacea from Factor Farms includes the actives in the organically-grown flowers and roots. Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Factor Labs measures levels of key active ingredients – in Echinacea they are polysaccharides, cichoric acid and alkylamides. This has allowed the creation of an echinacea extract that is high in all these important actives for a unique combination that is potent and effective. Natural Factors has trademarked the name Echinamide™ to identify this peerless line of Echinacea products. This high potency Echinacea extract is also found in the cold and cough syrup.

Natural Factors Echinacea Honey – gathered from hives in the Echinacea fields of Factor Farms – is the base for this effective cough syrup and is included for its agreeable taste and medicinal value, as honey is both antiseptic and antibacterial. Other compounds in the syrup are designed to soothe the pain of infected tissues.

The Expectorant Power of Mullein
To most people mullein is a common roadside weed with few redeeming features. To herbalists and natural medicine enthusiasts, mullein is one of the most important herbs for the relief of chest congestion and dry, irritating coughs. It is absolutely non toxic and has been approved by the German Commission E (an expert committee that evaluates the safety and efficacy of phytomedicines) as an expectorant useful for the treatment of respiratory catarrh. Barbara and Peter Theiss, authors of the delightful Family Herbal: “The mucins contained in mullein help to heal coughs and alleviate inflammations of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract. The herb also contains saponins, which aid in dissolving phlegm and encourage expectoration.” 2 Natural Factors includes mullein in its superior cold and cough syrup.

Horehound
Horehound’s reputation as a superb cough remedy goes back at least 400 years. The German Commission E has approved horehound for the treatment of bronchial catarrh. The volatile oil, tannin and a bitter principle called marrubiin, are responsible for its medicinal action. Varro Tyler comments on the value of horehound for respiratory tract problems: “The activity of the herb is attributed not only to its content of (0.06 percent) of volatile oil, but especially to a bitter diterpenoid lactone, marrubiin...This compound exerts a direct stimulatory effect on the secretions of the bronchial mucosa.” 3

Wild Cherry Bark
“Wild Cherry Bark’s use for reducing symptoms of respiratory distress is without equal in the herb kingdom. Its widespread inclusion in over-the-counter cough medications testifies to its acceptance by the pharmaceutical and medical industries (many such preparations, however, on the mistaken assumption that the herb is just for taste, only use cherry flavoring.) The real thing, the actual bark, is much more effective than most cough drop or throat lozenge-type preparations.” 4

Healing Oils of Lemon, Eucalyptus and Peppermint
Lemon has long been a favourite remedy for colds and coughs. In Natural Factors Echinamide™ Cold & Cough Syrup, lemon enhances the cough suppressing properties of the other herbs. Peppermint, traditionally used to treat digestive disorders, also has antiseptic and decongestant properties. Well known author and herbalist, Kathi Keville, recommends peppermint and eucalyptus in cough syrups. “They make a syrup or cough drop very tasty, but their real purpose is to stop your coughing. It is probable that one way these herbs work is by shutting down the brain's coughing center.” 5 Eucalyptus oil, with its decongestant and antiseptic actions, is included in the Echinamide™ Cold &Cough Syrup.

It’s always a good idea to check with your medical practitioner if your cough seems to hang on too long, or is accompanied by high fever.

Although very safe, pregnant women should always check with their nutritionally-oriented health practitioner before taking any medications or remedies. The dosage for adults is 1 to 3 teaspoons per day. It is not recommended for children under two.
